Man, 36, Dies in Bronx Fire

A 36-year-old man died Sunday in an early morning fire in an apartment building in the Bronx, authorities said.

Firefighters arrived at the building on East 230th Street shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday. When firefighters found him, James Turtein was in cardiac arrest in an apartment on the third floor, police said.

Turtein was taken to Montefiore Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

When the fire broke out, residents rushed to the fire escape. About 10 people were trapped on a second-floor fire escape for about 10 minutes because they couldn't dislodge the ladder to get to the ground level.

The fire is not believed to have been suspicious.
