Traffic Moving Slowly Again on Long Island Expressway After Accident

Traffic is moving slowly again on the Long Island Expressway after an accident briefly shut down all westbound lanes of the busy highway Tuesday.

All lanes were closed for a time between exits 58 (Old Nichols Road) and 59 (Ocean Avenue) in Islip due to a multi-vehicle crash shortly after 1 p.m. By 2:30 p.m., all but one of the lanes had reopened and traffic was moving slowly.

Two eastbound lanes were closed because of police activity, but they had also reopened by 2:30 p.m.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or whether there were any injuries.
