MTA Found Liable for Bus Accident That Claimed Woman's Arm, Leg

A jury has found the Metropolitan Transportation Authority liable for a bus accident in which a New York City woman lost an arm and a leg and was blinded in one eye.

Alfreda Kusz, of Queens, won a $20 million judgment on Wednesday, reports the Daily News.

Her lawyer, Alan Shapey, said she will be able to get the medical care she needs.

The 59-year-old woman was struck by the bus in Long Island City on June 15, 2009.

According to court testimony, she waited for the pedestrian walk signal before stepping into the crosswalk.

The MTA said it planned to appeal. It declined further comment.

City lawyers had argued that the bus had entered the crosswalk ahead of Kusz, and therefore had the right of way.
