MTA Bus Driver Arrested After Pedestrian Is Hit, Killed

Police say a MTA bus hit and killed a man on a Brooklyn street, and the bus driver has been arrested.

The 57-year-old driver was arrested on a charge of failing to yield after the fatal impact at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in East Flatbush, according to the NYPD. He's awaiting arraignment, and his lawyer's name isn't immediately available.

Police say the bus was making a turn from Farragut Road onto New York Avenue when it hit 78-year Jean Bonne-Annee. He died at the scene.

The MTA says the driver is being kept from driving a bus while it conducts its own investigation of the crash. The agency says its drivers are committed to safety.

John Samuelson, the president of the driver's chapter of the Transit Worker's Union, called the arrest "outrageous."

"There was no culpability on the driver's part and to have him arrested is outrageous," Samuelson said. "We're going to make this right one way or another."
