NY Firefighter Who Delivered Woman's Baby Saves Her, Infant From Fire

What to Know

  • A woman and two children were pulled from the burning home in Smithtown early on Wednesday.
  • The woman and her infant had been helped three months earlier by the firefighter who rescued them on Wednesday.
  • Two dogs were killed in the blaze.

A Long Island mother can thank the same volunteer firefighter for helping her and her baby twice in less than three months.

Volunteer firefighter Jenn O'Brien was among the emergency responders called to the home in Smithtown and is credited with pulling the mother and the infant from a bathroom in the burning home.

The woman, child and bathroom were all familiar sights for O'Brien. Officials said that on a call three months ago, she delivered the baby she saved Wednesday on that same bathroom floor.

"Jenn obviously is very emotional about this," said Jeff Bressler, a spokesman for the Smithtown Fire Department. "She has an emotional attachment that she'll have for the rest of her life to this family."

The child's father, also a volunteer firefighter, was at a Coast Guard site at Fort Dix when the blaze broke out.

Neighbors gathered around the home as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and rescue inhabitants. A second child was also pulled from the burning home.

"They started bringing the people out and working on them on the front lawn," said Kathleen Torres. "All the firemen, paramedics, police everyone was working on them and got them conscious again."

It's not clear if any of the people inside the home sustained injuries. Two dogs died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire wasn't immediately available.
