LIRR Service Back on Schedule After Cancellations, Delays for Repairs

Long Island Rail Road trains were running normally for Thursday's morning rush after a freight train derailment in Hicksville Tuesday caused two days of cancellations and repairs.

LIRR crews cleared both derailed freight cars that were blocking one of the two tracks shared by trains on the Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson branches, officials said. Crews worked around the clock since Tuesday afternoon to unload the debris from the freight car, remove the car and rebuild the track.

The work caused headaches for LIRR commuters into Wednesday's evening commute, when almost one-third of all its rush hour trains were canceled.

The LIRR reported that service was largely back on schedule Thursday morning, though some commuters reported some delays.

The Atlantic Railway freight train derailed west of Hicksville at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, and two of the train's 16 cars went off the rails, offficials said.

It was carrying some type of construction material or debris. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
