Driver Dies After LIRR Train Strikes Car

A driver was killed when his car was struck by a non-passenger Long Island Rail Road train near the Brentwood station.

A railroad official tells Newsday the 63-year-old driver and sole occupant was taken to Southside Hospital where he died from his injuries.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. Friday at the first crossing east of the Brentwood station.

LIRR spokesman Sal Arena says it's too early to tell if the gates were up or down when the accident happened.

Service — which had been suspended on the Ronkonkoma line east of Farmingdale — has been restored, but residual delays are expected.

Details on the circumstances surrounding the crash were not immediately available.
