A man and a woman were found dead in a minivan on Long Island with gunshot wounds from an apparent murder-suicide, Nassau homicide detectives said, according to a published report.

A witness reported seeing a fight inside the minivan, followed by loud noises that may have been gunshots, Det. Lt. John Azzata, commanding officer of the Nassau homicide squad told Newsday.

"It is my belief that the male was the initial shooter," Azzata said.

A handgun was found in the car, which was found in the affluent North Shore community of Matinecock, police said.

Authorities are still trying to confirm the identity of the man and woman.
