Man Dies After Getting Shot, Taking off in SUV and Crashing Into Long Island Home: Police

Police are trying to piece together the events that led up to a man who was shot crashing an SUV into a Long Island home.

Police say a 30-year-old man was shot in front of a home on Chase Street in Hempstead and took off in a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. A short time later he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a home on Rose Avenue.

The man was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. It was not immediately clear whether he died from a gunshot wound or from the crash. A passenger in the SUV was uninjured, according to police.

A couple was in the home at the time of the crash, but the two weren't injured, police said.

"The car hit her room and the wall came tumbling down," said KK Johnson, who witnessed the aftermath. "She didn't know what was going on until she came outside and saw a car crashed into the house."

Police were still investigating at the crash site Saturday morning and crime scene tape could be seen up around the home.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
