Police: Long Island Man Kills Girlfriend, Commits Suicide

Police say a Long Island man distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend stabbed her to death, then killed himself.

Suffolk County police responded to the murder-suicide in North Amityville after getting a 911 call Saturday just before 10 p.m. that a man was attacking a woman.

Officers found 32-year-old Virginia Vasquez and her 35-year-old boyfriend Stephen Guillaume dead in the doorway of their home.

Police say Vasquez's 14-year-old daughter tried to help her mother and was cut on the hand. The woman's 4-year-old son was not harmed.

Vasquez had two other children — daughters ages 7 and 15, Newsday reported. Guillaume was the father of two youngest children.

Vasquez' sister, Sandra Vives, of Bayview, told the newspaper that relatives had been planning her birthday on Monday.

"We should have been celebrating," Vives said.

She said the couple had been together for nine years, but the relationship was long troubled.

Family said Vasquez, who grew up in Brooklyn, worked as a dog groomer.

"She was always happy, laughing, and everything," her sister said. "She was always trying to help people."
