Long Island Man Kills Girlfriend, Shoots at Officers: Police

Police say the man shot and killed his girlfriend before barricading himself inside the apartment with two children

A man has been arrested on Long Island after police say he shot and killed his girlfriend, then barricaded himself inside an apartment with two children, at one point trading fire with responding officers.

Suffolk County Police say they were called to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex in Ridge just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday. When they got there, they found a woman on the front lawn dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Her boyfriend, Jose Rodriguez III, was barricaded inside with his two children. Hostage negotiators were able to get the man to eventually let the children go.

Then, police say, Rodriguez shot at responding emergency workers, who returned fire. No one was injured in the exchange.

Police say Rodriguez, 32,  eventually surrendered. He's charged with second-degree murder and attempted aggravated murder.

Rodriguez did not address the details of what happened but said while being transported by police Monday that he was sorry.

"I'm sorry for everything I did,"  he said.
