Man to Be Arraigned in Stabbing Death of Single Mother Found in Long Island Parking Lot

A Long Island man arrested in the stabbing of his former girlfriend faces second-degree murder charges.

Newsday reports that 54-year-old Jose Cartagena of Glen Cove is to be arraigned Monday.

He was arrested in California earlier this month. Police alleged he repeatedly stabbed Yanira Estella Canjura Martinez on March 26.

Authorities say Martinez was on her way to pick up her 5-year-old daughter when she was killed.

Nassau County police say she broke up with Cartagena a week earlier. She had left her native El Salvador with her daughter months earlier to live with Cartagena.

He told police he had started work picking grape leaves in California when he was arrested.

It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
