Long Island Dad Left Sleeping Daughter, 4, in Locked Car While He Shopped: Police

A Long Island father is under arrest, accused of leaving his 4-year-old daughter locked in the back seat of his car in a parking lot while he shopped, police say.

Police were called to Selden Plaza on Route 25 Wednesday afternoon after someone noticed the girl sleeping in the back seat of the Mercedes Benz, which had its windows open about a quarter-inch.

Responding officers and firefighters were able to unlock one of the doors and took the girl to Stony Brook University Hospital to be examined, according to authorities.

Police located the girl's 32-year-old father inside the TJ Maxx store at the plaza. They determined he had left his daughter for about 15 minutes while he shopped.

He faces a child endangerment charge and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Thursday.

Child Protective Services has also been notified, authorities say.
