Police Investigating Link Between Burglary, Standoff at Long Island Home

A Long Island homeowner said he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun early on Thursday as a quartet of burglars forced their way into his home.

The Farmingville homeowner, who was too frightened by the crime to go on camera, told NBC 4 New York that he was startled awake at about   a.m. to find the armed burglars inside his home.

The homeowner said the men broke his front door and ransacked his home. They made off jewelry, electronics and cash.

Police are investigating whether the burglars were involved in a standoff in nearby Port Jefferson Station about 45 minutes later. Police surrounded that home for about 3 hours before arresting two people and removing a child from the home.

Neighbors in Port Jefferson Station said they got calls from police telling them to stay away from their windows as police negotiated with the people barricaded inside.

Adam Vanderbilt said police had been at the home before.

"Honestly I wasn't shocked because they've had problems in the past," he said.

Anyone with information about either case should call the Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
