A Long Island college student was struck and killed while walking back to his car after running out of gas.

Police said 19-year-old Aaron Thomas, of Amityville, was pronounced dead at a hospital Saturday night.

He had run out of gas on the Expressway westbound in Commack, left his vehicle parked on a safety zone between the express zone and the entrance ramp, and went to purchase gas on Commack Road, police said.

His girlfriend was waiting for him in the car.

Thomas was returning with the gas at about 8 p.m. when he was struck at the entrance ramp by a vehicle entering the Expressway, police said.

The driver stayed on the scene. No charges were filed.

Thomas was a freshman at Suffolk County Community College. He was returning home from his first day on a new job.
