Long Island Man, Found With 8 Caged Pit Bulls, Accused of Dogfighting

A Long Island man has been arrested on dogfighting charges after he was allegedly found with eight pit bulls in cages, some of which had scars and were malnourished.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says 26-year-old Hector Hernandez was arrested Thursday after investigators found the dogs at his West Hempstead home.

Prosecutors say the dogs were living in substandard conditions. Two were malnourished and had fresh bite marks.

Prosecutors say the investigators also found heavy restraint chains and a treadmill that had been modified with a wooden frame and dog tether.

Hernandez was arraigned Friday on charges of dogfighting and failing to provide proper sustenance to the animals.

He is being represented by the Legal Aid Society, which had no immediate comment.

The dogs were taken to a local shelter.
