No Swimming at 3 Long Island Beaches Due to Rip Currents, Rough Surf

The state parks department says swimming is prohibited at its three ocean beaches on Long Island due to rough surf conditions and rip currents caused by the approach of Hurricane Cristobal.

The restrictions were issued Thursday for the Jones Beach, Robert Moses and Hither Hills state parks.

The beaches remain open but no one is allowed in the water.

Swimming is still allowed at the Sunken Meadow, Wildwood and Orient Beach state parks on Long Island Sound.

It also is allowed at the Great South Bay beach at Heckscher State Park.

A 17-year-old in New Jersey died this week after he was swept out to sea at an unguarded beach at Sandy Hook.
