Welcome home, athletes!

Local New York Olympians who competed in the Vancouver Winter Olympics were welcomed home with a parade Friday in Saranac Lake.

The event featured eight athletes led by Nordic combined star Bill Demong of Vermontville, who won the first gold medal for the United States in the sport.

Also feted were 16-year-old freestyle skier Ashley Caldwell of Lake Placid, 17-year-old ski jumper Peter Frenette of Saranac Lake, lugers Mark Grimmette of Lake Placid and Chris Mazdzer of Saranac Lake, and biathletes Tim Burke, of Paul Smiths, Lowell Bailey and Haley Johnson of Lake Placid.
