Passenger Flung Through Windshield After Losing Balance on Tour Bus: Official

A standing passenger who lost his balance as a tour bus he was on came to a stop en route to the Lincoln Tunnel Tuesday morning slammed into the windshield, and both he and the windshield ended up on the ground outside the vehicle, according to a public safety official.

The condition of the man after the accident on Boulevard East in Weehawken wasn't immediately clear, but he was taken to a hospital.

The tour bus, operated by Gunther Charters, was headed to the city from Baltimore. The owner of the company said the passenger was standing very close to the driver when the driver went to stop at a red light approaching the tunnel. The driver hit the brakes and the person went through the windshield.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, owner Martin Gunther said.

Photos showed the right side of the windshield completely missing from the bus as investigators pored over the scene. Authorities say the glass portion of the windshield didn't break, though the entire front window broke free from the bus.

Authorities said about 55 people were on the bus at the time of the accident. It was moved to an NJ Transit lot.

Traffic to the tunnel was largely unaffected.
