Legionella Found in Cooling Towers at 3 Long Island Schools; Officials

A Long Island school district says that Legionella bacteria has been found in cooling towers at three of its schools.

James Nolan, superintendent of the Sachem Central School District at Holbrook, said in a statement Wednesday Legionella was detected in cooling towers at the Seneca, Sequoya and East schools during routine testing in compliance with state regulations.

All three cooling towers were immediately brought off line and Nolan said an intensive disinfection and decontamination process was being scheduled. Follow-up monitoring and retesting will be performed.

Nolan said there have been no reports of Legionnaires' disease from any students, faculty, staff or visitors to any of the schools.

"The district will continue to ensure our facilities are safe and continue to be a healthy place in which to work and learn," Nolan said.

Earlier this month, the Smithtown Central School District reported cooling towers at Smithtown East and Smithtown west high schools tested positive for Legionella bacteria. They were brought offline and decontaminated. Officials say they are now back up and "running safely."
