Emu Dies After Rescue from Long Island Canal

The son of the man who owns the bird said he didn't know how the animal got away

An emu that was rescued from a Long Island canal on Memorial Day has died.

Police say the 200-pound bird escaped Monday from its owner's yard in Lindenhurst. It ran through the streets before falling in the canal in Copiague.

Newsday reports that it died after being pulled out of the water by police.

Stephen Weinkselbaum, whose father Steve owns the bird, said he didn't know how the emu got away. He said all the gates to the yard were locked.

Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA says it is legal to own an emu — though town regulations might vary.
