Train Hits, Kills Man on Tracks on Long Island

Officials say a Long Island Rail Road train has hit and killed a man on the tracks in Syosset.

The man was hit around 1 p.m. as an eastbound train neared the Syosset station. LIRR spokeswoman Marjorie Anders says the man was near a railroad crossing, though not actually in the area blocked off by the crossing gates. She says all equipment was working properly.

The man's name and age weren't immediately released.

Train service in the area was restored around 3:30 p.m. Passengers were briefly diverted to buses.
