A Long Island Rail Road train derailed this afternoon, temporarily suspending service east of Hicksville on the Port Jefferson branch.

Eastbound Service has been restored with residual delays of up to one hour. Westbound service remains suspended.

The derailment occurred at the Avery Road Crossing near Huntington, LIRR officials said.  Officials said a watermain break near the crossing apparently washed out the tracks, causing  the train to go off the tracks.

The train left Penn Station at 3:47 p.m. with 250 passengers onboard.

There were no reports of injuries and workers are trying to offload passengers, who have been stuck on the train since it derailed before 5 p.m.  NBCNewYork will update details as they become available.
