Hundreds crushed into the LIRR's Belmont Station after Saturday's race.

An MTA spokeswoman said a record number of people used the Long Island Rail Road's Belmont Station during Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

The crush of people caused a crowd at the station and delays in transporting them on trains as the station's two tracks were not enough to accommodate all the people leaving after the race ended in the early evening.

There were 36,000 riders who used the station Saturday evening, according to Margie Anders, an MTA spokeswoman, a record number for the LIRR at that particular station.

The race ended shortly before 7 p.m. but the last riders weren't boarded until around 10:30 p.m., Anders said, and the MTA had to run extra trains from the station.
