L.I. Man Charged With Starving, Neglecting Pit Bull

A Long Island man has been charged with animal cruelty for allegedly leaving his pit bull trapped in a travel crate without food or water.

Christopher Petit, 37, was charged with not caring for the dog, which was emaciated and left trapped in the basement of Petit's Port Jefferson home, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

SPCA detectives said the dog was kept in a travel crate in the dark basement living in its own waste.  The dog had cuts and sores over its body -- and bits of paper were stuck to the wounds.

SPCA Chief Roy Gross said the dog had no food or water when it was discovered.

It is unclear if Petit has an attorney.
