Historical Promotion of Black Woman to NYPD Assistant Chief

A veteran NYPD officer has reached the highest rank for a black woman in department history.

Kim Royster was promoted to assistant chief at a ceremony on Monday.

As a deputy chief, Royster was commanding officer of the NYPD's public information operation for the past five years. She'll now be in charge of its recruitment division.

Assistant chief is the third-highest rank at the nation's largest police department, behind bureau chief and chief of department.

Royster first became a police officer in 1987.
