Jury Convicts Queens Woman of Starving, Beating Stepdaughter

The woman is scheduled to be sentenced in September

A Queens woman accused of beating her pre-teen stepdaughter bloody and denying her food for extended periods was convicted Friday of assault and child endangerment.

Sheetal Ranot, 35, was accused of locking the 12-year-old girl in her room, hitting her in the face with a rolling pin and beating her with a broken metal broom handle that cut her wrist down to the bone.

Prosecutors argued that the Ozone Park woman and her husband terrorized the child from December 2012 to July 2014.

Doctors noted at the time that the girl weighed just 58 pounds.

Child-welfare authorities ultimately removed the girl from the home.

"No child deserves to be treated this way," said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown in a statement issued after the jury verdict.

Ranot is scheduled to be sentenced in September.

Her lawyer didn't returned a call from The Associated Press after court.

The victim's father, Rajesh Ranot, is awaiting trial on assault and other charges. He has pleaded not guilty.
