Judge: 9/11 Workers Could Get Extra $47.5M

A federal judge says World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers could get $47.5 million from the agency that owns the site.

In an order issued Thursday, Manhattan Judge Alvin Hellerstein said the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has tentatively agreed to settle the claims of more than 9,000 ground zero workers.

Hellerstein is overseeing the litigation by the workers. The Port Authority pact must still be approved by the agency's board of commissioners. But the judge called it "fair and reasonable.''

The agency has declined comment.

The workers also are eligible for a settlement of up to $712.5 million from the city, but only if 95 percent of plaintiffs say yes.
