New Jersey Officer Charged in Maryland Highway Shooting Death

Joseph Walker allegedly shot and killed another driver in Maryland

An off-duty officer with the Hudson County Prosecutor's office was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a man on a Maryland highway after the two were involved in an altercation on the road.

According to Maryland State Police, the officer, Joseph Walker, got into a dispute with 36-year-old Joseph Harvey Jr. while both were driving on I-97 in Anne Arundel County, Md., Saturday night.

Walker, 40, allegedly shot Harvey after they pulled over onto the shoulder of the road. Police said they were likely driving near each other for about a mile before they got out of their cars.

Authorities said Harvey and his passenger started walking toward Walker's car when Walker fired in Harvey's direction and hit him. Walker's wife and three children were in the car with him at the time.

Harvey was pronounced dead at Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

Walker, who lives in East Ampton, N.J., was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. He is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
