Misspelled Road Sign Points Way to Popular “Jonse” Beach

The Department of Transportation says all signs are supposed to be inspected before they go up

The misspelling of Jones Beach as "Jonse" on a new sign on Long Island's Robert Moses Parkway is making the rounds on social media.

Jeena Belil, of Brookhaven, who saw the misspelled sign on Facebook, told Newsday she was shocked somebody didn't proofread the sign.

The sign was hung recently over the parkway's southbound lanes on Captree Island.

The state Department of Transportation says the mistake will be corrected with an adhesive overlay in the next few days.

It told Newsday employees are supposed to inspect signs before they go up.

The state parks department doesn't believe the blunder will have any impact on visitors to Jones Beach.

Belil says she didn't report the error, saying "that's the beauty of social media — somebody important will see it."
