Failed Mayoral Candidate Liu to Sue City

New York City Comptroller John Liu has taken the first step to sue the city over his failed mayoral bid.

Liu filed a notice of claim Nov. 1 and says the city denied his campaign about $3.5 million in public funding. His lawsuit is seeking unspecified money damages.

The city board of elections denied the funds based in part on allegations of fundraising violations. According to a statement in August, the ruling was based in part on the prosecution of Liu's campaign manager and former fundraiser, found guilty in October.

The notice of claim was filed with Liu's office, and his attorney told the Daily News that he has recused himself from the matter.

Scott Stringer was elected the new comptroller.
