Jogging NYPD Officer Helps Rescue Man in East River

The rescued man was taken to Bellevue Hospital

An NYPD officer jogging on his meal break Wednesday morning helped rescue a man who appeared to be drowning in the East River.

Captain Gary Messina spotted a man jump into the river and then noticed that he started flailing in the water, police said.

Messina and two other men jumped into the river. One of the men, David Blauzvern, wrapped his arm around the struggling man, who weighed about 270 pounds, and managed to get him to the sea-wall along the river, police said.

The 50-year-old man, who was wearing a hospital bracelet, was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
