A garbage truck driver on Long Island was arrested Monday when inspectors conducting a safety check observed him under the influence of drugs, police said.
Officers from the Suffolk County Police Department's Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety Section and inspectors from the state Department of Transportation were conducting a safety inspection at a Park and Ride lot in Brentwood at about 2 p.m. Monday. They encountered Michael Maglione, 32, of Mastic Beach.
Maglione, a garbage truck driver for the town of Islip, had Oxycontin, cold medicine containing codeine, and marijuana, according to Suffolk County Police. A police officer determined Maglione was also under the influence of drugs.
The truck Maglione was driving was found to have numerous safety violations and was placed out of service, police said.
Maglione was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip. It wasn't immediately clear whether he had an attorney.
