2 Teenagers Arrested in NJ Cab Driver Murder

The body of Rochenel Guerrier, 49, was found in the predawn hours of July 7

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a New Jersey cab driver over the weekend, prosecutors said.

The body of Rochenel Guerrier, 49, was found in the predawn hours of July 7 when police responded to what they thought was a motor vehicle accident involving a cab and several parked cars on Mt. Prospect Avenue in Newark.

When authorities arrived, they found Guerrier with a gunshot wound in the cab. The Irvington resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

U.S. Marshals arrested Jeshon Johnson, 19, of Newark, Wednesday. Detectives arrested Alchane Mayes, 18, also of Newark, Friday.

Both teenagers were charged with felony murder, conspiracy, robbery and weapons offenses. Information on attorneys wasn't available. They are being held on $1 million bail at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.

Police said Guerrier was a married father of three. He had been employed by the Family Service cab company for about six months.

"These arrests should send out a clear message to those who choose to embrace the criminal element that the Police Department and its partners, will do everything within our powers to apprehend and assist in the prosecution of those who insist on criminal activity," Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said. "Removing these dangerous criminals from our streets while assuring the safety of our citizens was the top priority of all the agencies involved."
