96-Year-Old Woman Pushed to Ground at Manhattan Building Dies: NYPD

The 96-year-old woman who was pushed to the ground while trying to keep a man out of her upper Manhattan apartment building has died from her injuries, authorities say.

Flormena Vargas died Monday after the attack on Sept. 28 at her building on Nagle Avenue in Inwood.

Vargas was pushed to the ground by a man in a baseball cap that day and police say she broke her hip in the attack. Surveillance footage of the exchange shows the man swinging open the door and pushing the woman to the ground. He hovered over her briefly before taking off.

It's unclear why the woman was trying to keep the suspect, later identified as Hansel Ramirez, out of the building.

Ramirez was arrested last week on assault charges. It's not clear if he has an attorney, or if charges against the man will be upgraded now that the woman has died.

Neighbor Rose Gonzalez couldn't imagine what might have provoked such a violent response.

"That lady, she don't bother nobody. She's always here," she said.

Dylan Frank said the elderly victim is "very nice."

"I can't imagine why anyone would want to attack her," he said.
