Co-Sleeping Eyed in Death of 7-Week-Old Girl in Long Island Home: Source

Police are investigating the death of a 7-week-old girl on Long Island, and while autopsy results are pending, a law enforcement source close to the investigation tells NBC 4 New York detectives suspect co-sleeping may have been to blame.

Authorities responded to the home on Cornell Street in Hempstead after getting a 911 call about a baby not breathing shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Officers arrived to find the baby girl unresponsive; she was pronounced dead in the home 6 minutes after the initial 911 call.

According to the law enforcement source, the child's parents told police the baby slept in the bed with them and one parent may have rolled over onto her. The source said the baby appeared to be bleeding from the nose, but there were no other obvious signs of trauma to her body.

The family has other children and they appear to be well cared for, the source said.

The investigation is ongoing.
