Indian Point Gets Top Safety Rating — Security Not Included

New York's Indian Point has received a top safety rating from federal regulators.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said its inspection findings determined that overall, the nuclear plants "operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety."

Nonetheless, additional oversight of Indian Point 3 will begin in April because of emergency reactor shutdowns last year.

The agency also will continue to monitor Indian Point's new emergency alert notification system. In a December test, 37 of its 172 sirens failed. Plant owner Entergy said the problem has been fixed.

Indian Point is located in Buchanan, about 35 miles north of Manhattan.

The rating does not include security at the plant. That is evaluated separately.
