More Face-Numbing Winds, Record Lows Slam Tri-State, But Above-Freezing Temps Are Forecast for Wednesday

Another snap of arctic air is pummeling the winter weary tri-state with record-setting low temperatures and blasting, face-numbing winds, though Storm Team 4 says the mercury may climb above the freezing mark Wednesday.

Temperatures plunged into the low single-digits or below zero across the region early Tuesday for the third time in a little over a week. The cold shattered record lows for Feb. 24 at the region's three major airports, Islip on Long Island and in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

New York City saw temperatures plunge down to the 4-degree mark, while parts of New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Long Island saw temperatures below zero. Sussex, New Jersey, and Monticello, New York, saw the region's coldest temperatures as the mercury in each town sank to negative 15.

Temperatures struggled to get above 20 degrees across the tri-state area Tuesday afternoon, though blistering wind chills made it feel like 10 degrees or colder.

Storm Team 4 says the weather improves slightly Wednesday, with temperatures expected to hit a comparatively balmy 36 degrees.

It won't last, though, as temperatures are expected to plunge below the freezing mark again on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The icy waters have been plaguing commuter ferries, with the East River ferry announcing Tuesday it's suspending service until further notice. Riders should check back on the ferry's website before traveling on Wednesday.

March should kick off with temperatures above freezing, Storm Team 4 says. High temperatures Sunday should hit the upper 30s, and on Monday it'll be rainy with temperatures in the low 40s.

The cold temperatures are the latest punch from what Storm Team 4 says could be one of the five coldest Februaries on record in New York City.

This month has included prolonged periods of temperatures below the freezing mark, punctuated with bouts of snow, ice and other wintry weather. Friday's low marked the coldest temperature observed in Central Park in 11 years, and several areas throughout the region recorded record lows for the day that morning.

The coldest February ever recorded in the city was in 1934, when the average monthly in Central Park was 19.9 degrees.
