2 NY Firehouses in Running for Kitchen Remodel Contest

The winner of the online contest will get a renovated kitchen valued at $25,000

A Bronx firehouse and an 111-year-old firehouse in Yonkers, N.Y., are in the running to win a remodeled kitchen worth $25,000 from IKEA, and both are asking for online votes to get the prize.

Squad Co. 61 in the Bronx describes its kitchen as outdated, with rusting metal cabinets that were first installed in the 1950s. When you stand at the stove, you have to duck under the pots and pans hanging from above, the squad says.

Engine Co. 306, which says it is the oldest and busiest in Yonkers, describes its space as "rundown" and not updated since 1961.

The kitchen has "substandard appliances" and "less than pleasurable conditions" for people who spend 24 hours together, working, sleeping and eating, the company says.

The voting period ends Feb. 28, and both Squad Co. 61 and Engine 306 are asking for help to get to the top. You can cast your vote for the Bronx company here and for Yonkers here.

A winner will be chosen in March.
