Dozens of people have been charged in New York with forming an identity-theft ring that used stolen credit-card numbers to shop at Apple stores around the country.
A court document says the group used stolen account numbers to forge credit cards, then used the cards at Apple stores in locales from New York to Wauwatosa, Wis. At least eight defendants were arraigned Tuesday.
A law enforcement official says the allegations involve 27 people and roughly $1 million dollars' worth of merchandise. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case ahead
of an official announcement.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.'s office declined to comment. He and the U.S. Secret Service are expected to unveil a cybercrime case on Wednesday.
Apple Inc. didn't immediately return a call Tuesday.
