The Red Cross is serving up turkey dinners for 6,000 Long Island families affected by Sandy.
Volunteers were busy preparing the Thanksgiving Day essentials Thursday morning, at a makeshift kitchen in Deer Park. Volunteers came from all across the country and even Canada. Many slept inside tents so they could get an early start preparing the food.
"We are here to help," said Guy Lepage, a volunteer from Canada. "If it happened to us we'd be grateful if someone came to our aid."
The meals were loaded into dozens of disaster-relief trucks, which headed out to hard-hit areas so the dinners could be distributed to those in need.
For Lindenhurst resident Lisa Jansson, cooking Thanksgiving dinner in her severely damaged home was out of the question.
"We lost everything -- furniture, walls, floors, everything," Jansson said. "It's very hard. Not many restaurants are open today and we don't have the kitchen to cook."
Jansson said she was very appreciative of the sacrifice the volunteers had made to provide her and her loved ones with a Thanksgiving dinner.
"They have been awesome, they saved us," Jansson said.
