Hundreds Protest Nov. Killing of Man by NYPD Officer

About 200 people protested the November shooting of an unarmed Brooklyn man by a police officer in a darkened public housing building's stairwell.

The New York Times reports demonstrators chanted "Hands up! Don't Shoot!'' as they marched Saturday in memory of Akai Gurley from the development to a police precinct.

Police say the 28-year-old Gurley was accidentally fatally shot after opening a door in a pitch-dark stairway that Officer Peter Liang was patrolling.

Brooklyn prosecutors say they're presenting the case to a grand jury.

The protesters carried on despite pleas from Mayor Bill de Blasio that such demonstrations halt until after funerals are held for two officers ambushed one week ago.

One of those funerals was held Saturday. Plans for the second haven't been announced.
