How to Keep Black Bears From Roaming Your Backyard

To keep the bears away, keep the trash at bay, warn police in Ramapo.

The department posted the video below to Facebook showing four black bears roaming a backyard on West Gate Road in Montebello with a list of helpful tips for residents who want to avoid a similar scene at their homes.

Police say “good housekeeping” will keep the bears away and recommend the following safety measures:

  • Remove bird feeders after April 1. Bird feed such as suet and seeds are a very strong attraction for bears, even if they can't reach it.
  • Do not leave garbage outside of houses or garages. Garbage is extremely attractive to bears. It should always be kept in sealed garbage cans inside a sturdy building like a garage or shed. Even dirty diapers will attract a bear.
  • Mask garbage odors with ammonia-soaked rags.
  • Remove the grease can from gas and charcoal grills after every use. Turn the grill on "High" for several minutes after you are done cooking to burn off residual odors on the grill.
  • Do not place food outside to attract wildlife. Any food used to attract birds, squirrels or other wildlife will also attract bears.
  • Do not feed pets outside. Leftover food or even an empty dish can attract a bear.
