Homeless Man With Long Rap Sheet Arrested in Rape Attempt on Lower East Side: NYPD

A man with a long rap sheet has been arrested in a rape attempt on the Lower East Side earlier this month, police say.

Robert Adames, 41, is the man police say followed a woman into her apartment building in the area of Norfolk and Rivington streets, shoved through her door and groped her on March 3.

He then tried to take off her clothing but the woman resisted, and the man ran away, police said.

Adames has been arrested on attempted rape, sex-motivated burglary, forcible touching, sex abuse and criminal trespass charges in the case. Attorney information for the man wasn't immediately clear.

Police sources say Adames, who is homeless, has been arrested 40 times since 1998, mostly for robbery and drug possession. He is on parole until 2020 after serving two years in prison for a 2012 perjury conviction, sources said.

Police haven't said if they believe if the rape attempt is connected to a string of robberies around the same time on the Lower East Side and Chinatown.
