Two men have been arrested in connection with an early-morning home invasion on Long Island that led to a bizarre chain of events involving a police dog, a car crash and two injured officers.
Suffolk County police say the chaos started when two suspects broke into a home on Morris Avenue in Holtsville shortly after midnight Wednesday. There were four people in the home at the time; police say the people in the house knew the suspects, and they do not believe the target was random.
Someone called police after the break-in and the suspects tried to get away. One of the men was bitten by a police dog as he tried to flee responding officers. Both suspects apparently managed to get into their car and tried to drive away, but they hit a marked cop car, authorities say. The officer driving the cop car was not hurt, but two other officers were injured as they took the suspects into custody. Both of those cops are expected to be OK.
One of the men was arrested on a charge of burglary; he's being treated at Stony Brook Hospital. The other is charged with criminal trespass.
Police did not elaborate on a possible motive for the break-in.
