Following the scandal, the New York Post published an extensive photo shoot showing Dupre in provocative poses. She became the subject of increasingly intense media coverage. The Village Voice called her "the most famous hooker in America."

The woman who brought down one of the most powerful politicians in the country is now apologizing to his wife, and claiming that her relationship with former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer was "strictly business," which was kind of the problem.

Ashley Dupre is the prostitute who had a tryst with former NY State Attorney General and then-Governor Eliot Spitzer. When it was uncovered, the crusading "Steamroller" had to resign his office and cede it to current NY Gov. David Paterson. In an interview with People magazine, Dupre revealed that she had no idea who her client was when she bonked him at Washington, DC's Mayflower Hotel.

She felt worst, however, when watching the press conference in which Silda Spitzer stood by her man as he apologized for having an affair with a prostitute. "I try not to revisit that place too often, but when I think about his speech, I think of her face, her eyes, the hurt."

If she could say anything to Silda now, Dupre said it would be: "I'm sorry for your pain."

When having sex with the socks-clad governor, Dupre says she didn't even know who he was at the time. "I mean, as a lot of 22 year olds. I was wrapped up in my family, my music. I knew the name, but the face . . . I'm not really a TV person, " she told People in an interview to be published Friday.

The affair was eventually revealed via a leak by Roger Stone, a Republican operative and admitted swinger who travels in the sexual circles where such information gets whispered. The public reaction was swift and final for Spitzer, who previously had been a strongman prosecutor, railing against prostitution rings and Wall St. profiteers. His downfall was met gleefully by many who felt persecuted by the prosecutor turned governor.

Dupre was working for the Emperor's Club VIP prostitution ring, which was being investigated by federal law enforcement. She conducted her business under the pseudonym "Kristen" and Spitzer was Client 9. Prosecutors recently decided not to charge Spitzer for having sex with a prostitute.

ABC will air a lengthy interview with Dupre this Friday, conducted by Diane Sawyer on "20/20."
