The alleged hit-and-run driver who demolished a New Jersey bus stop last week, killing a 59-year-old woman who worked at a nearby nursing facility before leaving his SUV in the wreckage and fleeing on foot, has surrendered to authorities, a law enforcement source familiar with the case tells News 4.
Olvy Torres, who was allegedly driving the vehicle that destroyed the stop in front of Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center, turned himself in Monday, the law enforcement source says.
Police had been looking for the 36-year-old Torres on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident since Tuesday's deadly crash in North Bergen. Attorney information wasn't immediately available. Sources have said he didn't own the SUV involved in the crash, but that it hadn't been reported stolen.
The woman who was killed, Luisa Valdes of Union City, worked at a skilled nursing facility next to the hospital. Co-workers say Valdez had just gotten off the bus to go into work and was having a cigarette at the bus stop when the car slammed into her. Valdez was a grandmother who had worked as a nursing assistant at Harborage for 25 years, the co-workers tell News 4. She was from North Bergen but had recently moved to Bayonne.
No other injuries were reported in the crash. Authorities have not said how many people were at the bus stop when the crash occurred.
