One New Yorker has a plan to protest fare increases for buses and subways that are expected to wallop commuters next year: He's calling for a one-day boycott.

Louis Kenny has been passing out fliers calling for a boycott on the day fares are expected to go up -- June 9, 2009. He says people should walk, take a bike or call in sick to work that day instead of relying on public transportation.

The Metropolitan Transportation Agency says it needs to raise fare revenue by 23 percent because of a massive budget shortfall.

In calling a boycott, Kenny says, "It's time to show the MTA who really runs New York City's public transportation."

Kenny says the agency should reinstate the 50-cent fare on the Staten Island ferry and charge more for advertising.

  • Martine Sunday, Nov 23 at 12:09 AM FLAG COMMENT I think it's absolutely ridiculous that the MTA wants to raise the fare and make drastic cuts in service. How dare the MTA board propose major service cuts like eliminating 2 subway lines and some bus routes. The subways and buses are already crowded as it is and ridership has gone up. If anything, to save money, they should cut upper management bonuses. The chairman should also ride the subways and/or buses and see what it's ... MORE >
  • Giovanni Centurione Saturday, Nov 22 at 11:24 PM FLAG COMMENT I'm all for a Boycott, I had to walk during the strike in December of '05, I'm sure I can do it again in June. With the economy sinking as much as it is right now, how is the average New Yorker going to afford the already high fare when and if it goes up? To save money, heck i'll ban all subways and buses even after June 9th. to save for more useful items such as food and rent.
  • barb Saturday, Nov 22 at 8:12 PM FLAG COMMENT I don't ride the subways but watching what all the commuters are going through really ticks me off. The MTA has alot of nerve asking for a fare hike and turning around and say by the way.. You should boycott if you can. If you can find another way to get to work and/or school, then do it.
  • Al Jollette Saturday, Nov 22 at 10:31 AM FLAG COMMENT As one who benefits from the protections of a union shop, I shake my head every time I think about the few lazy do-nothings who are protected by my union. As they say, "one bad apple in the barrel..." As the rest of us are busy at our work - it's always the few lazy good-for-nothing unionized workers that everyone see's reading their newspapers and talking on their cell phones on the job while everyone looks on in disbelief. ...
