Temperatures soared into the stifling 90s across much of the tri-state area Monday ahead of a spate of storms that was bringing damaging wind, torrential rains and hail.
The mercury hit 93 degrees in Central Park, a temperature not seen there since Sept. 3. It reached 94 degrees at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and a steamy 95 degrees at Queens' LaGuardia Airport by early afternoon.
Con Edison said electricity demand in New York City swelled to its highest this year -- 12,600 megawatts -- by about 3 p.m. The last time the demand was this high was July 20, 2015.
Much of the tri-state was advised to brace for heavy rain, and possible thunder and lightning. Parts of northern New Jersey were reporting trees and power lines down as the storms pushed in.
One woman was killed when live wires hit her car in Fanwood, New Jersey, police said.
The storms should push out of the region later Monday evening, giving way to slightly lower temperatures and less humidity on Tuesday.
By Wednesday, real relief from the heat comes as highs only climb to the low 80s.
Storm Team 4 says it'll be a short respite, however, as a potential weekend heat wave could spike temperatures above the 100-degree mark on Saturday.
