Man Fatally Stabbed Subway Swipe-Seller Who Punched Daughter: NYPD

Police have identified the attacker who they say stabbed and killed a 53-year-old man who authorities said punched his daughter in a Manhattan subway station on Wednesday.

Authorities say that Julio Velazquez, 48, stabbed Herbert Burgess to death inside a 2/3 subway station at West 116th Street and Lenox Avenue at about 9 p.m.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said that Burgess was trying to sell Velazquez's daughter swipes from his MetroCard at the station and got into an argument with the woman when she declined his offer.

At some point, Boyce said Burgess took a $1 bill from the woman and punched her in the face, and she left the station and called Velazquez.

Velazquez then came to the station wielding a knife and got in a fight with Burgess, Boyce said. Velazquez allegedly stabbed the man in the back at some point during the scuffle.

The victim then got on a southbound 2 train and was found at the back of the train at the Central Park North - 110th Street station.

Police say he was then taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he later died.

Anyone with information about Velazquez should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
